A long shot, I know … but does anyone know the English word for “lota” ? It’s a long, green, stringy vegetable used in Bengali cuisine.
Can’t seem to find the answer on the web and my students need to know for a guide they are writing about East London markets.
All ideas appreciated – thank you!

i have showed it to couple of Bengali friends but they have no clue. they say that its not a Bengali word. In Hindi “lota” means vessel to hold/drink water. its twice as big as normal glass.

Thanks for asking, Ashish…
Lota is definitely a vegetable, though… it may not be a Bengali word, but that’s what my Bengali students call it! In the end, they just used the Bengali word in their writing.
