Hello SG. Look at the bright side: if you still have 5 carrots and the swede, that means you’ve used the rest of the vegetables.
When my oldest son moved out to share a house with his girlfriend, my remaining son and I were struggling even more to use the more unusual vegetables. We eat a lot of stir-fry, and most of the supplied vegetable weren’t easy to use that way. So we switched to the, not very advertised, Riverford Fruit Box; we find this easier to use because you can just grab a fruit and eat it with no planning or preparation.
If, in a month’s time, you are guiltily looking at four swedes and a small mountain of carrots that’s the time to re-think.
If I were in your position (we can thank the Lord that I’m not! the SLT universe is safer in your hands than mine!) I would feed the carrots to my horse and throw the swede at a passing pig (they’ll eat anything!). x
Get a juicer - then you can drink whatever is left at the end of each week. Although, swede juice might be a bit of a hold your nose and swallow affair!
Sounds Great SG! Beware the notorious Jerusalem Artichoke though. We had a whole bag of ‘em last week in our box, and their after effects are pretty lethal….
Genevieve: Yours was the winning idea … I made some soup today with tons of carrots (there were more in the newly arrived box), the swede, some onions and potatoes.
Pierre: the fruit box sounds interesting - I’ll have to check it out.
Brennig: alas (or perhaps fortunately), there are very few pigs and horses wandering streets of St Ratford!
Mya: the juicer is a good idea… but yes, I might pass on the swede juice!
MC: There were some jerusalam artichokes in my box this week. I’ll be looking to you and GP for inspiration re what to do with them!
The fruit box is more interesting in the summer. At the moment, they use a lot of citrus fruits and some bananas, although this week’s box had some very nice red apples.

I have been subject to much nagging about the lack of fruit and veg I eat over recent months. I like sprouts, carrots swede and cabbage. Sweet spuds may be a delicacy in the UK but having eaten more than my fair share over the years they have lost their magic for me.
I can highly recommend Jerusalem artichoke soup. Great taste and the after effects are hilarious. Childish - I know but….
SG, nice to ‘meet’ you and thanks for the visit. I too am a Riverford victim, though have to say I think they are fantastic. Am wondering though at what stage I will have to hire a plumber to get rid of all the mud in the drains that has come off the carrots…
Oh yes, and noticed Norman bigging up jerusalem artichoke soup - he’s right, it’s delicious, and Delia has a recipe in her veg cook book. Or of course you could always just check in with Pig in the Kitchen; that woman is never knowingly under-reciped…
